Foot & Ankle Mobility: Why a San Diego Sports Chiropractor Looks From the Ground Up
When patients come into Team Elite Chiropractic with knee pain, hip discomfort, or low back issues, they’re often surprised when we start by looking at their feet and ankles. But from a sports chiropractic perspective, this makes perfect sense.
Your feet and ankles are your foundation. If movement or alignment is off at the base, the stress doesn’t disappear, it travels upward through the knees, hips, and spine. For athletes and active adults in San Diego, this “ground-up” approach is critical for both performance and injury prevention.
Why the Foot and Ankle Matter So Much
Every step, jump, squat, and sprint starts at the foot and ankle. Limited mobility or poor mechanics here can force your body to compensate elsewhere, often leading to pain or overuse injuries.
As San Diego sports chiropractors, we frequently see foot and ankle dysfunction contributing to:
- Knee pain
- Hip tightness or impingement
- Low back pain
- Poor squat or lifting mechanics
- Running and walking inefficiencies
That’s why a full-body movement assessment is such an important part of care.
The 3 Key Areas We Assess in the Foot & Ankle
1. Ankle Dorsiflexion
Ankle dorsiflexion refers to how far your knee can travel over your toes while keeping your heel on the ground. This movement is essential for squatting, lunging, running, and jumping.
When ankle dorsiflexion is limited, your body often compensates by:
- Leaning forward excessively during squats
- Placing extra stress on the knees
- Overloading the hips and low back
This is one of the most common mobility restrictions we see in athletes and active adults.
2. Midfoot & Arch Function
Arch height varies from person to person, and having a high or low arch isn’t automatically a problem. Issues tend to show up at the extremes, very rigid high arches or completely collapsed arches (flat feet).
Poor arch support or foot positioning can affect ankle alignment and contribute to problems like:
- Knee and hip pain
- Overpronation while walking or running
- Bunions and other forefoot issues
In some cases, custom orthotics can help place the foot in a more neutral, supportive position.
3. Big Toe (Great Toe) Extension
Big toe mobility plays a major role in walking, running, and athletic movement. If the big toe doesn’t bend upward properly during push-off, the body finds another way to move, often by “whipping” the foot outward.
Over time, this compensation can contribute to:
- Knee pain
- Hip and low back stress
- Changes in gait mechanics
- Bunion formation
Signs You May Have Foot or Ankle Mobility Issues
Not sure if your feet or ankles are part of the problem? Common signs include:
- Difficulty squatting deeply without collapsing forward
- Feeling “stuck” at the bottom of a squat
- Poor balance or stability
- Foot pain, bunions, or recurring ankle stiffness
- Knee, hip, or back pain with no clear cause
A simple at-home test is the knee-to-wall test: if you can’t touch your knee to the wall from about four inches away without lifting your heel, ankle mobility may be limited.
How Compensation Leads to Injury
When mobility is lacking in the foot or ankle, your body compensates elsewhere. These small changes, repeated thousands of times while walking, running, or training, can lead to overuse injuries.
Common compensation-related issues we see include:
- Knee pain from altered gait mechanics
- Hip and low back pain during lifting or sports
- Poor squat and deadlift form despite good strength
The pain usually shows up where the body is absorbing the stress, not necessarily where the problem started.
Do Mobility Issues Develop or Are You Born With Them?
The answer is both.
Some people have genetic tendencies that influence joint shape or natural mobility. But lifestyle plays a huge role. As kids, we naturally squat, crawl, and move through full ranges of motion. Over time, especially in Western cultures, we sit more, move less, and lose mobility we no longer use.
Unless joints are regularly taken through their full range of motion, stiffness and restrictions are almost inevitable.
How a San Diego Sports Chiropractor Treats Foot & Ankle Issues
At Team Elite Chiropractic, we don’t just chase symptoms. Our approach focuses on identifying the root cause and restoring proper movement.
Treatment includes:
- Full-body movement screening
- Soft tissue work to improve mobility
- Chiropractic adjustments to restore joint mechanics
- Corrective exercises to strengthen and maintain new ranges of motion
The goal isn’t just short-term relief, it’s long-term resilience and performance.
