What to Expect at Your First Visit to Team Elite Chiropractic in Pacific Beach
Starting care with a new chiropractor can come with a lot of questions. Where do I park? How long will I be there? What happens once I'm on the table?
Our newest office sits in the heart of Pacific Beach, just one block from Mission Boulevard. Whether you're dealing with a nagging low back, a sore shoulder from surfing, or an injury that's keeping you out of the gym, here's exactly what to expect from your first visit.
If you've read about our treatment approach, you know we don't follow the typical quick-adjustment model. Every new patient gets a thorough evaluation so we can find what's driving the problem, not just where it hurts.
Finding Our Pacific Beach Office
Anyone who has hunted for a spot near the beach knows parking in PB can be half the battle. Our Pacific Beach location has free parking on site, so you won't circle the block or feed a meter before your appointment.
Our office is located inside the Fitness Quest 10 gym. When you walk in, you'll see a bright, open training space with plenty of turf, set up for strength and high-performance training. Look directly to your left and you'll find the Team Elite office behind large glass windows overlooking the gym floor.
We designed the space to feel open and welcoming. It gets lots of natural light, and it's air-conditioned for those warm summer months. Inside, you'll find our chiropractic tables and a small rehab area, and we also have full access to the gym for your rehab work.
Before Your Visit: Complete Your Intake Form Online
The best thing you can do before your first appointment is fill out your intake form online. It gives your doctor a head start on planning for treatment.
The form covers:
- Your contact and insurance information, and who referred you
- The reason for your visit, when it started and your pain level on a 0–10 scale
- Whether the injury is related to an accident, such as a car accident or a slip and fall
- A body chart where you mark every area you feel pain
- How your pain behaves: whether it's getting worse, how often it shows up and how it feels (dull, achy, burning, stiff, pins and needles)
- Any care you've already had for it, such as a medical doctor, physical therapist or another chiropractor, and any X-rays, MRIs or CT scans
- Current medications and supplements
- Past injuries, accidents and surgeries, plus your general and family medical history
- Informed consent to treatment
Past history matters more than many people expect. If you're dealing with low back pain but have had three ankle surgeries, that ankle may be a big part of why your back keeps flaring up.
Your Initial Evaluation
Plan on about an hour for your first visit. The evaluation moves from the big picture to the specific, and each step helps us narrow down the diagnosis.
1. An In-Depth Health History
We start by talking through what brought you in and your history: previous injuries, accidents, surgeries, and any other health conditions that may play a role. We'll review what you put on your intake form and fill in the gaps.
We also like to ask about care you've tried before. What worked? What didn't? If something helped, we can build on it. If your body didn't respond well to a certain treatment, we can leave it out.
2. A Head-to-Toe Movement Assessment
Next comes the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). It lets us see how every joint in your body moves, from head to toe. For each movement, we're asking two questions: Do you move well? Is there pain?
This helps us find areas that aren't moving well and may be contributing to your main complaint, even if they're not where you feel pain.
3. Orthopedic Testing
Once we have the big picture, we focus on the area that's bothering you, whether that's your low back, knee or shoulder. Specific orthopedic tests help us pinpoint which structure is involved: muscle, joint, ligament or disc.
4. Neurological Testing, When Needed
If you're experiencing numbness, tingling or weakness, we may add neurological tests, such as checking muscle strength and reflexes, to see whether a nerve is irritated.
By the end of these steps, we'll have a working diagnosis and a clear plan for your care.
Your First Treatment
With a diagnosis in hand, we choose the tools that fit your case. That choice depends on whether your injury is new or long-standing, what care you've already had, and how your body responds. Your treatment may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments for the spine and the extremities, such as shoulders, hips, knees and ankles, to get stiff joints moving
- Soft tissue work, including Active Release Technique, cupping and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM, or "scraping")
- Kinesiology taping when it's needed
- Topical creams to ease muscle soreness and acute pain
- Laser therapy, often recommended when pain is high and affecting your daily life, to help calm inflammation and pain early in care
- Shockwave therapy, a tool built specifically for chronic tendon problems
Not every patient needs laser or shockwave. For many, we start with hands-on care, adjustments, and exercise, and see how you respond. Your doctor will recommend the extra modalities when they're likely to help your case.
Rehab on the Gym Floor
Every session ends with corrective and rehab exercises, and you'll leave with exercises to keep working on between visits.
This is where our Pacific Beach location really stands out. Along with our in-office rehab area, we can take you out onto the gym floor, where we have room to move and access to bands, medicine balls, kettlebells, dumbbells and barbells. As you progress, we can load you with heavier weights and work toward movements that match your daily life or your sport, so you're ready to get back to play.
What Follow-Up Visits Look Like
Follow-up visits last about 30 minutes. Since the full assessment is done, we get right to work.
Each visit starts with a quick check-in. How are you feeling? How did the exercises go? What's improved, and has anything gotten worse? From there, we adjust your treatment for the day.
We may switch up your soft tissue work from visit to visit, such as cupping one day and scraping the next, to see how your body responds. When you're ready, we progress your exercises and make them more challenging.
