How Chiropractic Care Benefits Baseball Players

How Chiropractic Care Benefits Baseball Players

As the official chiropractic provider for the San Diego Padres, we at Team Elite Chiropractic know a thing or two about the physical demands of baseball. While all athletes can experience aches and pains from their sport, baseball can be particularly rough on the body because of the repetitive rotation and asymmetrical postures demanded by the game. This often leads to players developing imbalances and overuse injuries if these issues are left unaddressed. Whether a baseball player is in pain, feeling tight, or simply looking to reduce the risk of future injuries, chiropractic care is a great way to determine problem areas, loosen tight muscles and joints, and maximize performance while minimizing injuries.

Common Baseball Injuries

When people think of baseball injuries, the elbow and shoulder generally come to mind. Baseball certainly sees no shortage of painful arms and shoulders, but you might be surprised to learn that we see a lot of rib, neck, hip, and lower back injuries in our baseball players as well. Throwing and batting send the body into extreme rotation, always only in one direction, over and over again. These motions require coordinated effort and control from the ground up. If areas are out of alignment or the body is not prepared to handle such extreme forces, problems will inevitably arise.

If you think an ankle sprain is painful, imagine how much a sprained rib must hurt! Stiff hips, a tight upper back, and a weak core can lead to areas like the neck, lower back, and ribcage moving and working more than they should, leading to stiffness, pain, and time spent out of play to recover from injuries.

Chiropractic Care for Baseball Players

Contrary to popular belief, chiropractic care is not limited to addressing spinal issues, nor is it exclusively composed of spinal adjustments. Team Elite Chiropractic engages in both injury rehabilitation and injury prevention for baseball players throughout the San Diego area. We help return injured athletes to play and ensure uninjured athletes stay strong and pain-free so they can avoid sports injuries in the first place. After a functional movement assessment reveals areas we need to focus on, we use a variety of treatment tools such as active release technique, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilizations, and chiropractic adjustments to release tension in overworked muscles and stiff joints, followed by core exercises to keep the spine stable and moving in a safe, coordinated motion.

Once any pain is relieved and tight areas are mobilized, we slowly add functional strength training and baseball-specific drills in order to simulate the demands of the sport. This leaves athletes stronger, less tight, and moving better. Not only will they be less likely to experience an injury, but they are also set up to produce more force, move faster, and hit harder because of their improved efficiency. Our chiropractic care is a powerful and effective tool for any San Diego–based athlete looking for injury rehabilitation and/or prevention.
